Cashill spends quite a bit of time “putting himself to sleep” (in quotes, because it ends with sleep about 50% of the time). We live in a tiny condo and so, no matter where we go we’re eavesdropping. Typically he has enough self conversation to last 45 minutes. Here’s the end of it, today, when things got real punchy.

” abcd…..now I know my abc’s….” (fill in dots with words to the song)

“oh yeah. pizza!”

“abcd…..now I know my….”

“that’s not a big one, that’s a little one!”

“no! That’s my big one.”

“oh, yeah! Cheese mama.”

“yeah yeah sausage. Yeah yeah yeah!” (to the tune of Frere Jacques)

“yellow pillow. Buffalo blanket.”

“no more monkeys jumping on the bed!”

“NO! JUMPING!”

::crying::

“abcd…”

“spider. starfish. ants. rolly polly. BUTTERFLY”

“butterfly.”

scarlet + cashill

cashill told us the other day that he wants a little sister “just like scarlet”. we asked, do you want a little sister like scarlet has a little sister? or do you want a little sister who is similar to scarlet? well. cashill wants scarlet in his home all the time. and can we make that happen please?

basketball shorts

cash recently discovered that there is an article of clothing named for a sport. needless to say, it was a revelation and has made for an exciting week.

tuesday i brought home a pair of blue basketball shorts from target. he wore them to bed tuesday night. to school wednesday. and then we endured an hour of tears while they ran them through the wash so he could wear them again to bed weds night and to school thursday. thursday night we went to a party and i somehow convinced him basketball shorts didn’t meet the dress code so again they went to the wash. he wore them to bed that night and didn’t take them off until 5am this morning when i found them soaked in pee. he is that kid wearing the same shorts for 4 days.

this morning was a disaster. he woke up screaming to put on his nasty blue basketball shorts with no negotiations. an hour of crying until target opened. and now we are the proud owners of additional black and yellow pairs of the same basketball shorts.

he’s changed between the two throughout the day. always keeping the other on hand, just.in.case. he napped in the black pair with the yellow cuddled to his cheek. as i type he and matt are playing soccer in the driveway, wearing the black, with the yellow in a death grip.

oh brother.

I’m traveling for work this week. Always bittersweet. Mostly I miss the boys and home and our routine. But there is always the sweetness of seeing old friends from different cities, accomplishing some big to-do’s in our satellite offices and… um… getting an uninterrupted night of sleep isn’t terrible.
